During this Advent season, our Minister, Rev Nick Pastelis, has been leading our congregation through the “Songs of Christmas.” Through these reflections, we have been reminded of the stories of those characters who often fade into the background of the Christmas narrative, yet whose lives offer us powerful lessons about waiting, believing, and celebrating the God who keeps His promises (see our December newsletter).
In much the same way, when we turn our attention to the hymns and carols, we sing at this time of year, we discover that each one has its own story to tell. As we move through the season, we may listen to or sing these familiar songs, but do we always pause to truly hear the message within their words?
If we were to explore their origins, we would find that many of the hymns and carols we cherish began as poems, were inspired by poetry, or were drawn directly from the Psalms and other passages of Scripture, later set to music. Throughout Advent and Christmas, their shared message is one of praise to God our Father — our light, our strength, our hope, and our calm amid life’s storms. Above all, they proclaim the enduring truth that God’s love for All of us never fails. Whether we recognise it in our daily lives or not, He is always present, walking beside us and offering His love.
It makes us wonder how many other stories and messages might be uncovered if we took the time to look more closely at the words we sing.
This festive season, may we encourage you to listen a little more deeply to the hymns and carols we share, and may you hear the rich and meaningful stories woven into their words.
God bless.
